The third fire is an attack on the Peonian church. This cannot stand. What was a political and economic issue becomes an issue of eternal damnation.
16th of Nolus, late afternoon
The temple of Peoni is aflame. Sir Kjarri stops the bucket brigade, Sir Tirn races to the main door and Maketa Seenaë runs for the other doors. She finds the door is hot and has been wedged shut. She works at removing the wedges. She finally realized that the fire is right there, and instead goes to the front to help Tirn. There is a prayer being sung and Seenaë joins in.
Tirn, Seenaë and two knights manage to get the door open. Father Yosef and his acolyte along with Tamarie manage to get out. Tamarie is badly burned on one hip. It takes about an hour to put the fire out. Seenaë goes with Maketa Yordag to the Peonian hospital to help heal Tamarie.
Kjarri gathers up the party at the temple courtyard. He has a man with him, a local merchant called Gered Barian. He travels with his brother Kine. They’re staying at the Safe Harbor Inn. The party has a strange feeling about him, but there is no hard evidence. Tirn will go to the Serolan to report, but Seenaë wants to go speak to the merchant’s brother.
Tirn and Seenaë, in separate locations, prepare for prescient visions – he to the Guild of Arcane Lore, and she to the Laranian temple close. Seenaë gets a vision: she is in a building during a Laranian service. The officiant is standing on a huge shield held up by eight people. Everyone seems to be of a more vibrant hue than she is. Seenaë realized that something is staring at her from behind the eight people under the shield – it is a lion. It pads forward and touches its nose to hers, and expresses surprise that she is here. The lion is Mendiz, constable of Larani.
Mendiz leads Seenaë away, first bowing to an armored lady off to the side and behind the officiant. He speaks with Seenaë, and confirms her suspicions about the two brothers, and who is behind the fires in Selvos. He then gives her some information that the party did not have – the location of a certain gryphon carving. Seenaë comes out of her trance near dawn.
The party goes to the Safe Harbor Inn and take custody of the two brothers, destroying the gryphon statuette hidden behind their bed. They are taken back to the Laranian temple, where their cart had been parked; as they approach, a flaming arrow falls out of the sky, striking the cart. It explodes, showering the area with burning debris. The men get brought into the temple, and the party runs to try to apprehend the archer. They find nothing but an evil residue that fades in the sunlight.
They return to the temple to watch the interrogation of the brothers by Rablena Larissa. They receive confirmation that the merchants were behind the fires, and are working for no-one. They are not Morgathians: this is all about revenge for what was done to their families (they were the children of the Dislynë, the millers before Barris). Larissa holds her battle-axe up before them: nothing happens when she holds it to Gered, but the tip of the pommel catches fire when held up to Kine. Gered will be hung, but Kine will be fed to the fires he promised to make. Tirn arrives after having spoken to the Serolan and tells the party that they have the option of either investigating the town the brothers are from, or calling an inquisition. They decide to investigate first.
