AsMaketa Seenaë Dyren is puttering around Sir Tirn of Selvos‘s family’s home, the usurer Valanar of Emyn comes to find her. One of his clients is missing a wool cart; they haven’t shown up. It was being driven by 3 men, one of whom was unknown to her. Mirren and Noravus were laborers she had hired before, but Tor was new. Seenaë asks Valanar to bring her to his client – Lady Kamnyle of Ryvila. She gives Seenaë a description of the men and tells her where she last saw them. Seenaë decides to go find Tamarie and whoever else she can find to go back along the road to look for the missing men and cart. She manages to find the entire group, who agree to come along. The group heads up the road to the last known place of the cart. Tirn sends his crow to scout ahead.
The crow finds a new-ish cart, abandoned across the river near Burdy. No bullock, no wool, no axle.
The party rides into Burdy. The reeve Croial is sent for. While they are questioning him, Seenaë realizes he is terrified of something, but not of them. The party figures out that whatever he is afraid of is in the reeve’s cottage, and they tell him to get somewhere safe. The party heads for the cottage. Tirn removes a spell that was placed on the building and now it looks old and rotten. Florentina (Nina) prays to Sardura for help and rushes off. Seenaë follows her.
In a copse of trees, they find a very bruised and bloodied man: it’s Mirren, one of the missing workers. He tells the group that the wagon wheel broke; they got it fixed and then Tor gave the other two an ultimatum: he lost his temper and took it out on Mirren. Noravus agreed to do what Tor wanted to stop the beating. They drove the cart to the village, unloaded the wool and when Novarus asked for helped Mirren got beaten again. Tamarie comes back with the Peonian priest and two helpers to take care of Mirren. Everyone else follows the trail Nina is on. It heads towards Mount Kalimar. As the party nears the top of the mountain, Kjarri gets the same feeling he had at the house in the village: he finds a cabin half sunk in the earth. Inside they discover the butchered body or Noravus. Seenaë digs about in the building and discovers a ritual bowl; she cleans it up a bit and asks Tirn to track the Morgathian with it.
The party burns the building and heads back towards town. Once Mirren is feeling better he will head back to Selvos with the wool cart. The party heads back to Selvos, hot on the trail of the Morgathian.
