When children go missing, who else should the knights of Larani turn to but the small group of men and women who have at least some experience with mysteries.
1st of Penou, night.
A hue & cry is raised through the temple. Once roused, the party arrives to find one of the corporals of the town guard, Corporal Kopin of Osforn, banging on the chest of the captain of the watch, crying something about his children. Judicar Larissa hauls off & slaps him, and he collapses, begging someone to find his children. The party brings Kopin to the Infirmary. He comes to, and tells us that his son and 6 other children from the village who often play together did not come home and were feared missing. There are two ships in port – one was searched, but the other refused as their captain was not on board. Sir Kjarri of Setara and Sir Tirn of Selvos go to begin searching where the children were last seen, while Matakea Seenaë goes with a page to await the arrival of the other ship’s captain.
Seenaë manages to get the angry mob demanding to be allowed to search the ship to disperse with some well-chosen words and a glare or two. She & the page wait for the captain to return to his ship. Mateka Yordag comes to relieve her, saying that Sir Tirn, Sir Kjarri & Nina are across the bay, and she go join them with the help of a couple of militiamen. She meets with Nina on the shore, and Nina takes her and two of the guards to meet the others, where they have found a covered hole.
With the aid of one of the guards, the hole was uncovered. The party & one of the guards went down to investigate. It led to a finely wrought stone tunnel, that Sir Tirn somehow discovered was made by the dwarves. The party managed to get through a closed portcullis, and after some through searching of rooms, finds the children locked in a secret room in the dark. The party starts to lead them out, when Sir Tirn & Mateka Seenaë notice the ghost of a little girl in another of the rooms. She doesn’t seem to notice their presence, and they decide to investigate once the children are safe. Sir Kjarri & Nina had led the children back to the cavern during their initial investigation.
Upon reaching the cavern, it is discovered that they are no longer alone. They are challenged by a voice in the darkness. Threats are made against the party and the children. The voice informs the party that the guard they left above ground has been killed. Matekea Seenaë call on the power of the Light of Dolithor, lighting up the dark cavern and generally incapacitating the five evil-doers. One of them goes beserk and heads for her, but Sir Tirn steps forward to intercept, and manages to cripple the assailant, who dies of his wounds. Nina keeps the children calm, while Sir Kjarri kills another of the opponents. One is grappled to the floor by Nina, and the last is fought off by Sir Kjarri and the remaining guardsman. The last opponent wisely surrendered when the light of Larani was brought forth.
The party discovers that the men were ordinary smugglers who were using this dwarven complex as a base of operations. They were accidently discovered by the children, and locked them up while deciding what to do with them. He also informs the party of three ghosts in the complex – besides the little girl, there is an old man and an angry spirit.
The party and the guard bring the children and the prisoners back to town, where the kids are reunited with their overjoyed families. Matekea Seenaë speaks briefly with one of the priests of Peoni on how to deal with the spirits trapped on the other side of the river.
