4 Morgat, 721
Sir Temilin Chahrvn, accompanied by the party and 5 of his personal guard, head off to visit Reliquae (a small town north of Menekod where relics are kept). The stelae stands on the far side of the central well. Sir Temilin tells the story of this place: this is the resting place of Andazin the First; he was interred briefly here before being moved south. Legend says that the stelae was originally far from the town but appeared in this location overnight. This was the first of five miracles Andazin caused. The group prays at the stelae, ignoring the polite offerings of the townsfolk. Once the prayers are ended, the townsfolk applaud, and share their food and drink. An older man takes everyone to Andazin’s tomb, where they take turns going on. On the stone slab is a clay death mask of Andazin the First; the guide tells the history of the founding of the kingdom, focused on Andazin himself. Maketa Seenaë Dyren leaves the tomb, but the others call her back in shortly; they swear she bears a resemblance to Andazin’s death mask. Sir Temilin suggests she keeps this possible connection quiet. All return to Menekod.
The trip back is uneventful. Sir Kjarri of Setara and Sir Tirn of Selvos get involved in the competitions; they do well and are invited back for swordplay the next day. Tirn is also invited back for the next day of wrestling. Menekod is bustling up until the 10th, when people start to leave. Sir Temelin plans to leave on the 15th. Lady Miara Korades will go south to meet the grain shipments. Tirn and Kjarri face off against each other in the sword fighting; it is a close match, but Tirn emerges victorious. Seenaë spends time with Sir Gressen while he helps her improve her heraldry skills. Rekela Sir Tamys Bakyth requests Sir Temilin’s company for the return trip to Selvos. The party spends their time from the 10th to the 14th packing and preparing for the trip.

There is a large party on the evening of the 14th. The motley fool tells the stories of the people of Selvos – Setarra of Seta Heath, the extra corpse, the haunted tower and kidnapping, the summer tourney, guarding the roads and stopping Agrikans.

The party sets out at dawn on the 15th. Most are quite hungover. At lunch, Clemens of Desforia passes out a foul concoction; it makes everyone quite ill, but they are free of the hangover. Shortly after lunch they pass a keep under construction; the Banner of Honor are stationed there now. They challenge the group, and Sir Temilin quickly berates them; they step a side. Some time later, the group hears Sir Temilin giggling to himself. Later in the day they begin to look for a campsite. The scouts and Tamarie discover that the group has been traveling in circles. Florentina (Nina) speaks of a myth she remembers, of a wild spirit known to confuse people if it has been angered. She suggests that the group camp and leave offerings for this spirit. The fog rises. Seenaë remembers a song that describes what this creature looks like: it is called a Lesshe. She turns and sees a bush move over one of the offerings. She tells the spirit to enjoy its meal, and moves away.
During the meal, they hear what sounds like a heart exhaling, and they see a bush move off. All settle down to sleep. The fog rises with the rising wind. Dawn comes and the wind finally blows the fog away; the offering bowls are clean. Along the path out of the vale, someone has cut the grass in a swath at the four cardinal points of the camp; four runes are inscribed: it translates to “Ambrose sends you warning.” That day they make progress; a few people think they see the Lesshe during the next few nights.

On the second night Tirn seeks a vision regarding Ambrose’s warning: he sees crows eating carrion.

On day three, travel is slow. Near noon the outriders spot a murder of crows an hour or two away. This is the sign that the path will be broken, the danger is there. As the group approaches, one crow lands on Tirn’s pommel. The smell of rotting meat is evident. The ridge line, there is a large flooded gap in the path. The smell is traced to a dead Aklash; it may have been killed by another kind of troll, a Nola, which is probably still around. The road starts again ten feet on. The group decides to cross the water.
The two outriders and one guard try to cross, but the last doesn’t make it and is pulled under. Reklena Tamys and Seenaë work on purifying the befouled water, and Nina and Sir Bressen, Tirn and Kjarri go in after the guard. Nina falls badly and she and Bressen are pulled out, Tirn and Kjarri rescue the guard, then go back in after the Nola. Tirn starts dragging it out, and Kjarri deals a killing blow. It holds a large and intricate battle-axe in its hand.
