After this, the master cook Tatras is brought forth. He did not know the lady well, and has a good opinion of Wereda. The cook’s son, Rardir, comes in after to speak with the party. It seems many of the womenfolk do not like Wereda; Sir Poryn’s squire remarks that Wereda has no gentleness in him; also, Wereda is only at religious ceremonies when he has to be.

The party heads to the Halean temple to speak with the high priestess, Queleine of Latral. The previous high priestess, Cleerae of Shandar, was in residence when Lady Alicia died. She offers to send a letter to her predecessor so that the party can speak with her; she checks the rolls, but no-one fitting Patricia’s description seems to have joined the temple after Alicia’s death. They are offered the help of a Halean named Cleral, who brings luck wherever he goes.
